6 weeks until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

“The sun is setting on the New Republic. It’s time for the Resistance to rise.” –Princess Leia Organa, Star Wars: Bloodline

Star Wars: Bloodline is about the ending of Leia’s political career in the New Republic and the secrets she uncovers hinting at the rise of the First Order.

Written by: Claudia Gray (author of Master and Apprentice, Leia, Princess of Alderaan, Lost Stars, and From a Certain Point of View short story)

Published: May 3, 2016

When does Bloodline take place?

A few years before The Force Awakens in the year 28 ABY.

Synopsis:

The politics of the New Republic has been split in two. Populists fight for each and every planet of the galaxy to govern themselves while Centrists are desperate to create one ruling government over all. Fed up with the circles the New Republic keeps creating, Princess Leia Organa has decided to move on from politics after one last mission.

On a distant planet Leia and her team discover forces rising against the New Republic, but at closer look, these aggressors seem to be originating from within the Centrists themselves. After Leia’s darkest secret is publically revealed, her credibility as a politician is destroyed, but that does not stop Leia from continuing her fight for the freedom of the galaxy.

The last of the Claudia Gray Star Wars books in this blog series and Bloodline did not disappoint. I love Princess Leia so much and her strength and integrity are very evident in this book and key to the storyline. Bloodline also shows all sides of Leia’s personality including her temper when standing up for something she believes in strongly.

More than any other book so far, including the Journey to The Force Awakens series and the Journey to The Last Jedi series, Bloodline sets up the new Star Wars trilogy. We read about both the rise of the First Order and the rise of the Resistance. Hosnian Prime is a key location in this book and characters are introduced, or have their stories expanded, who then appear in the new trilogy. Bloodline might also explain why no one answered Leia’s cry for help at the end of The Last Jedi, though a different reason may be explained in The Rise of Skywalker. And it definitely gives more insight to Ben Solo’s journey to becoming Kylo Ren.

I would recommend Star Wars: Bloodline to anyone who is a fan of Princess Leia or anyone who wants more background on the events leading up to The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
