Lilo & Stitch is a fantastic film. It has so much heart and features a cast of very loveable characters. I love the character of Nani and I think the animators did a great job of capturing the struggle of her trying to be an adult while still being so young herself. She will decide what is best for Lilo one minute and then stick her tongue out at her little sister the next.

The Story:
Lilo & Stitch begins at the Galactic Federation Headquarters on the Planet Turo. The Grand Councilwoman asks Captain Gantu to read the charges to Dr. Jumba Jookiba. The doctor stands before the council and he is accused of illegal genetic experimentation. Jumba pleads not guilty and argues that his experiments are all theoretical. The Grand Councilwoman says that he did actually make something and Experiment 626 is brought in. Jumba admits that he made only one. The crowd and the council gasp at 626 and Gantu demands to know what this monstrosity is. Jumba is insulted. He claims that 626 is bulletproof, fireproof, can think faster than any super computer, can see in the dark, can move objects 3000 times his size, and his only instinct is to destroy. The Grand Councilwoman tries to reason with 626 and asks if there is anything inside him that is good. 626 responds by saying something that causes everyone to gasp and be very offended. The Grand Councilwoman thinks that 626 is naughty. 626 just laughs and Jumba says that he did not teach the Experiment that. Jumba is arrested and the Grand Councilwoman tells Gantu to take 626 away.
626 is brought to the prison transport and locked up. He has a sample of blood taken which is loaded into a set of guns. Gantu arrives and tells 626 that he is going to be banished to a deserted asteroid. He also explains that the guns are now locked on 626’s genetic signature. They fly off in a ship with an entire police fleet following behind.
626 quickly figures out that if he spits on the guard watching him, the guns will fire at his genetic signature in the saliva. When the guns start firing at the guard, alarms go off in the ship and someone claims that 626 is loose on Deck C. 626 escapes with security chasing him through the ventilation system but he is able to steal a police cruiser before they reach him. 626 flies by Gantu’s ship on the red police cruiser and the fleet continues the chase. They think they have 626 surrounded but he soon jumps into hyperspace. Captain Gantu sighs and asks for someone to get him the Grand Councilwoman.
The Grand Councilwoman is very angry and asks where 626 is now. She is informed that he is heading to a planet called Earth. The Grand Councilwoman wants an expert on Earth to aid her. She sees on the screen that 626 is heading towards the ocean and she knows that he won’t survive in the water. But then 626 lands on a small island called Kauai. The Grand Councilwoman is determined to gas the entire planet but Agent Pleakley comes running in to stop her. He says that Earth is a protected wildlife reserve for the recovering mosquito population. Pleakley gives the Grand Councilwoman a viewfinder that shows the different Earth species. He explains that these species are very delicate and he and the Grand Councilwoman argue whether to capture 626 via military or do a quiet capture.
They decide to use Jumba for the extraction and they head to the prison to get him. Jumba is angrily ripping up a newspaper with the headline “Idiotic Scientist Jailed.” The Grand Councilwoman and Pleakley go into his cell and make a deal. Jumba will help with the capture of 626 in exchange for his freedom. Jumba wants to use a plasma cannon to do it and this is granted by the Grand Councilwoman. Pleakley says again that Earth is a delicate planet and that Jumba will need to be controlled. The Grand Councilwoman decides that Pleakley will go to Earth with him then. Pleakley is not happy about this.
The next scene is of tropical fish in the ocean. The song “He Mele No Lilo” is playing. A fish with a peanut butter sandwich swims by. The scene goes back and forth between the ocean and hula dancers. Lilo is swimming in the ocean and the title card is shown. Lilo runs out of the water and grabs her beach bag. As she is leaving the beach, she sees an overweight, sunburnt tourist and she stops to take a photo of him. The tourist drops his ice cream cone. Lilo keeps running and puts a grass skirt on as she does.
Four girls join the hula dancers and the dance instructor realizes that Lilo is missing. Lilo sneaks onto the stage and joins in the dance, but she has tracked water everywhere. At the end of the song, Mertle slips and the instructor asks Lilo why she is all wet. She explains that it is sandwich day and that every Thursday she gives Pudge the fish a peanut butter sandwich. But today they were all out of peanut butter and her sister suggested giving Pudge a tuna sandwich. Lilo thought that was an abomination so she had to go to the store to get peanut butter and that was why she is late. This is all very important to her because she believes that Pudge controls the weather. Mertle calls Lilo crazy and Lilo attacks her; the other girls start screaming. The instructor tries to calm everyone down and suggests that he call Lilo’s sister. Lilo apologizes and promises to be good if he does not call her sister because she just wants to dance. All other girls think that it is gross that Lilo bit Mertle.
Lilo is sitting outside the dance studio on the porch and is looking very sad. The other girls go running past her, laughing. The instructor comes outside and says that he called Lilo’s sister and she said that Lilo should wait outside on the porch. He suggests that they will try again on Sunday. Lilo runs to catch up with the other girls. They are all playing with their dolls and each doll looks like their owner. Mertle warns Lilo that she better not have rabies. Lilo pulls out her own doll from her bag. She named her doll Scrump and says that she made the doll herself. Lilo explains that Scrump’s head is too big so she pretends that a bug laid eggs inside the head. Lilo looks up from Scrump and notices that the other girls are gone. Lilo throws down Scrump and stomps away, but she quickly runs back and picks up her doll.
Nani arrives at the dance studio but cannot find her sister. She starts to run home. Along the way, a car almost hits her and she kicks the car and calls the driver a Stupid Head. At home, Nani discovers the front door locked and hears Elvis music playing from inside. She yells at Lilo to open up the door but Lilo just tells Nani to go away. Nani is very upset with her younger sister and says that they do not have time for this as the social worker is on the way. Lilo just stays lying on the floor, singing along to Elvis. Nani pokes her head through the dog door and realizes that Lilo had nailed the door shut with many nails. She grabs a hammer to try to pull out the nails, threatening Lilo as she does. The social worker pulls up and overhears this. Nani realizes that the social worker is the driver whom she called a Stupid Head and is very embarrassed. She tries desperately to redeem her first impression. The social worker introduces himself as Cobra Bubbles and Nani suggests that they sit outside to talk but Bubbles immediately says “no.” Nani leads him around the backside of the house and they have to climb over railings and through the bushes.
Nani tells Bubbles to wait by the back door and she runs around to the other side. Bubbles hears a window breaking and the record player stopping. Lilo yells “hey!” Nani opens the back door and lets Bubbles inside. He asks if she leaves her sister home alone often and Nani tells him that she never does. But Bubbles spots a picture on the fridge that Lilo drew of herself being home alone. There is also something burning on the stove. Bubbles then meets Lilo and tells her that he is a special classification of social worker. Lilo gives him a rehearsed speech about how happy she is but then she tells Bubbles that she is also disciplined five times a day. Nani quickly interrupts and sends Lilo on her way, blaming too much sugar. Bubbles informs Nani that he is the one who is called when things go wrong and things have indeed gone wrong.
He then finds Lilo in the living room learning how to do voodoo. She tells him that her friends need to be punished. Bubbles gives her his card and tells Lilo to call him the next time she is left alone. Lilo agrees. As Bubbles is leaving, he tells Nani that if she is wondering, this did not go well. He breaks open the front door to leave and tells Nani that she has three days to change his mind.
After Bubbles leaves, Nani turns and gives Lilo a death glare. Lilo screams and Nani chases her around the house. Nani hears her sister hide in the dryer and tricks her into thinking that she left. Lilo comes out of the dryer and Nani scoops her up in a blanket and carries her back to the living room. Nani wants to know if Lilo does not understand what she has done. She asks Lilo if the girl wants to be taken away and Lilo just scream “no” and starts to tear up. The two sisters argue and Lilo storms upstairs, saying that Nani should just get a rabbit instead. She slams her bedroom door. Both sisters scream into pillows.
At night, Lilo is in her bed holding Scrump and Nani brings her some pizza. Lilo comments that they are a broken family and tells Nani that she likes her better as a sister than a mom. Lilo wants to know if Nani likes her better as a sister than a rabbit. Nani climbs into bed and snuggles with Lilo. Lilo confesses that she hit and bit Mertle that day and complains that people treat her differently now. Nani says that people just don’t know what to say and Nani promises that if Lilo doesn’t fight with the other girls, Nani won’t yell at her except on special occasions. Lilo suggests Tuesdays and bank holidays. Lilo then tells Nani that her camera is full again and indicates to all of her photos of tourists at the beach. She thinks that they are all beautiful. The lights suddenly go out and they see a falling star. Lilo claims that star to wish on and pushes Nani out of her room. Nani overhears Lilo wish for a friend and maybe an angel.
626 emerges from a burning ship wreck. He shoots at waterdrops and threatens a frog. 626 then gets hit by three trucks in a row. The drivers stop and think that they should call someone.
626 wakes up in a dog shelter and the rest of the dogs are cowering in a corner. 626 growls at the dogs and goes to grab his gun, which isn’t there.
Lilo and Nani are at the front desk of the shelter, wanting a pet that is sturdy and won’t die. Lilo suggests a lobster but Nani points out that they have a dog door and not a lobster door. 626 sneaks out the front door of the shelter but notices a red laser on him. Jumba starts to shoot at 626 from the bushes. Inside, Nani is filling out the forms as 626 sneaks back inside. Lilo goes back to the kennels by herself to pick out a dog.
All of the dogs are hiding in fear from 626 and Lilo can’t find any of them. 626 sees an adoption poster and gets an idea. He sucks in two of his six arms and antennae. He pretends to be a dog and says hi to Lilo before giving her a big hug. In the lobby, the rescue lady is telling Nani that all of their dogs are adoptable but when Lilo walks out with 626, she screams “except that one!” Nani and the rescue lady pull Lilo and 626 apart and the rescue lady says that the dog was dead that morning. Lilo declares that she likes him. She likes that he can talk and 626 stars to say hello again but the rescue lady says that dogs cannot talk so he keep quiet. Nani gives in and the rescue lady says that Lilo needs to give him a name. Lilo wants to name him Stitch and the rescue lady says that isn’t a name but Nani quickly shakes her head and she finishes her sentence with “in Iceland.” There is a $2 fee and Stitch is all theirs.
Jumba is still outside and looking at the shelter with heat vision goggles. Stitch goes outside and Jumba is about to shoot him but Lilo then appears and Pleakley stops Jumba from shooting the human. He says that the girl is a part of the mosquito food chain. Pleakley shows Jumba the viewfinder and Jumba thinks that it is low to use a little girl as a shield. He starts to run towards Stitch but Pleakley stops him because he cannot be seen and they must blend in.
Nani must go to work that afternoon and she tells Lilo and Stitch to stick around town and to stay off the roads. She gives Lilo some money before heading off. Stitch is watching an old monster movie in a shop window and he pretends to be the monster. Lilo notices her friends nearby and is very excited to see them, but they only try to run away from her. Lilo stops them and apologizes to Mertle for attacking her the day before. Mertle threatens to run Lilo over with her tricycle. Mertle then sees Stitch and starts screaming at the ugly dog. Jumba and Pleakley are dressed as tourists nearby and are watching them. Stitch notices the other aliens and grabs Mertle’s tricycle. He drives off with Lilo in tow.
Jumba explains that 626’s destructive nature is taking over and he will be drawn to large cities where he will back up sewers, reverse street sighs, and steal everyone’s left shoe.
Lilo and Stitch ride around the island and Stitch is annoyed that he is running into ocean in all directions and that there are no large cities. Lilo comments that it is nice to live on an island with no large cities and Stitch starts to freak out. The song “Stuck on You” starts to play and Lilo tries to play fetch with Stitch. He won’t play so Lilo sprays him with some water. Stitch grabs the sprayer and throws it and Lilo has to go get it. They then eat lunch with Nani and then play on the beach. Jumba and Pleakley are following them around so Stitch has to keep pretending to be a nice pet for the protection behind Lilo. He explores the island with her.
At a luau at night, David is a fire dancer but he ends up burning himself and the stage. Stitch and Lilo are sitting at a table in the audience and Stitch laughs at David’s misfortunate. Lilo is colouring a picture of Stitch and this picture shows his badness level. She explains that it is unusually high for someone your size. Nani is a waitress at the luau and she walks by their table. She tells Lilo that her dog can’t be sitting at the table but Lilo just demands dessert. David then walks by and Lilo introduces him to her new dog. Nani then brings out two pieces of cake for Lilo and Stitch and Stitch eats both of them. He then realizes his mistake and spits the cake back out. Lilo thinks this is gross. David asks Nani on a date but she refuses because she has so much to deal with and she walks off. Lilo tells David not to worry because Nani likes his butt and fancy hair; Lilo admits that she read Nani’s diary. Stitch is then lured away by a piece of meat on a string. Jumba catches Stitch but Stitch eats Pleakley’s head. Nani stops Stitch but her boss witnesses her dog chewing on someone’s head and fires her, despite Pleakley trying to brush the incident off and not draw attention to themselves.
At home, Lilo asks if Nani lost her job because of her and Stitch and Nani responds that her boss was a vampire and wanted her to join his legion of the undead. Lilo comments that she knew it. They go inside the house and Lilo tells Stitch that he will love his new home. Stitch immediately destroys a pillow and then begins to destroy the whole house. Lilo and Nani are arguing about whether they should bring him back to the shelter or not. Lilo asks what about ohana because ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten. This gets to Nani and she gives in. She comments that she hates it when Lilo uses ohana against her. Lilo and Stitch scurry off to bed.
Upstairs, Lilo has set up a pineapple crate bed for Stitch in her room. She gives Stitch a bottle filled with coffee and Stitch hops into Lilo’s bed with his bottle. He finds a photo under Lilo’s pillow and Lilo immediately yells at him that he shouldn’t touch the photo. Stitch starts to destroy her room and Lilo puts a lei around him and he immediately calms down. Lilo suggests that he makes something instead of destroying everything and so Stitch starts to grab random things around her room. He creates a model of San Francisco but then pretends to be a giant monster and he destroys the city.
Jumba and Pleakley are camping outside and Jumba is watching Stitch through binoculars. He thinks that Lilo is wasting her time trying to calm down 626. Pleakley is very excited that a mosquito has chosen him to land on but then a whole swarm attacks him.
Nani is on the phone with David while looking through a dog book. She tells him that she thinks Stitch might be an evil koala. She finds him grapping a soda out of the fridge and she screams and drops the phone.
Stitch is back in Lilo’s room and is looking very sad. Jumba comments that it is very interesting that since he did not give 626 a greater purpose, he now has nothing to do once he has destroyed everything around him. Stitch finds a book about the Ugly Duckling. He wakes Lilo up and points to the page where the ugly duckling says he is lost. Lilo explains the story to him and Stitch then goes into his own bed with the book. Lilo then asks if Stitch wants to listen to the “King” because he looks like an Elvis fan.
In the morning, Lilo wakes Nani up at 7:15 to show her Stitch’s new trick. He can place his finger on the record player, open his mouth, and music comes out. Nani then hears a car and runs downstairs to find Cobra Bubbles at the dory. He says that he heard that she lost her job and Nani quickly says that she quit because the hours were not good for raising a child. Stitch then throws a book at Bubbles and Nani apologizes. Bubbles asks what that thing is and Lilo is very proud to say that he is her puppy. Bubbles is not impressed and he informs Nani that he can’t ignore the fact that she is jobless. He also says that next time he sees Stitch, the dog must be a model citizen.
Nani is answering newspaper ads for jobs but it is not going well. Lilo is simultaneously trying to teach Stitch how to be like Elvis, because he is a model citizen. She teaches him how to do things like hula and play the guitar. Meanwhile, Stitch also keeps ruining Nani’s chances at getting a job. She tries to get jobs at places like a market, coffee shop, hotel, and lifeguard. Lilo also teaches Stitch about romance and preforming as Elvis. He plays on the beach but reacts to the flashes for tourists’ cameras and becomes a monster. The overweight tourist looses his ice cream again. After the incident, both Nani and Lilo sit on the beach looking very sad.
David comes up to them and Lilo says that they are having a bad day. David suggests surfing to cheer up. The song “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” plays as they surf and then play on the beach until sunset. Jumba and Pleakley are watching again from nearby. Jumba is very surprised that 626 is returning to the water willingly as Stitch is having a lot of fun with his new family. Pleakley gets a call from the Grand Councilwoman because she is overdue for a report and Pleakley lies and says that they almost have 626 in custody. Jumba then grabs Stitch off of the surfboard in the water which causes Lilo and Nani to crash off the board. Stitch is grabbed by Jumba and dragged down into the water. Stitch grabs Lilo in response but Nani thinks that he is trying to drown Lilo and kicks him off her sister. David rescues Stitch out of the water.
Cobra Bubbles is nearby and sees this. Nani tries to convince him that everything is okay but he responses by saying that he knows she is trying but she needs to think of what is best for Lilo. He will be by in the morning to take Lilo away. Nani and Lilo sadly head home and David tells Stitch that he really thought they had a chance until Stitch came along.
At nighttime, Stitch goes to their home and sees a family of ducks along the way. This makes him feel even more depressed. Nani and Lilo are sitting outside in a hammock and Lilo tells Nani that if she could give her big sister a job, she would. Nani starts to sing “Aloha ‘Oe” to Lilo.
Inside, Stitch finds the photo under Lilo’s pillow again and sees that it is of her family. Lilo comes into her room and explains that was their family before her parents died. She said that it was raining and they went for a drive. She asks Stitch what happened to his and says that she hears him crying at night. Lilo offers that Stitch can be a part of their little family and explains what ohana means. But Stitch leaves by hopping out the window. He takes the Ugly Duckling with him. He then sits in the forest and reads the book to himself. He says out loud that he is lost.
Jumba and Pleakley crash to the shore and declare that they hate this planet. The Grand Councilwoman calls again and says that she has lost patience. She says that they are fired and prison bound. Jumba is happy about being fired because now he can catch 626 his way.
The Grand Councilwoman tells Captain Gantu that this is his chance to redeem himself and he leaves immediately for Earth.
Stitch is still alone in the forest when he wakes up. He hears a sound and it is Jumba. Stitch explains that he is waiting for his family but Jumba informs him that he does not have a family and that he was only made to destroy. Jumba wants Stitch to come quickly but Stitch runs away.
Nani is having breakfast and a somber Lilo comes downstairs. She is sad because Stitch left but tries to convince herself that it is a good thing because they don’t need him. Nani says that sometimes they try their hardest but things don’t always work out the way they want them to. There is then a knock on the door and Nani opens it to find David. He says that he found a job for her but she has to hurry. Nani tells Lilo to stay inside and not to open the door for anyone. She runs off with David.
Stitch comes running back to the house with Jumba shooting after him. He goes inside and Jumba follows and says that there are no rules anymore. The song “Hound Dog” plays as Jumba chases Stitch throughout the house. Stitch and Lilo turn Scrump into a bomb to ward off Jumba. Pleakley then appears to try to stop Jumba. Lilo calls Cobra Bubbles to inform him that aliens are attacking her house. Stitch tries to shoot Jumba with his gun but Jumba sticks a carrot in it. This causes the gun to explode which causes the entire house to explode. Pleakley is able to get Lilo out of the house in time.
Nani is leaving the hardware store where she just got a job and then panics when a firetruck drives by. She sees it turn left and knows it is going to her house. At the house, Bubbles is putting Lilo inside his car. Nani is protesting this and Stitch is sadly watching from the sidelines. Lilo sneaks out of the car and Stitch follows. He found her family photo before finding her and gives it to Lilo. Lilo tells Stitch that he has ruined everything and then Stitch grows out his alien arms and antennae to show her who he really is. Gantu appears and captures both Stitch and Lilo in a net. He almost stomps on Nani as he leaves the forest. Nani sees him put Lilo in his spaceship.
Stitch escapes from the ship before it takes off and Nani hits him with a branch. She demands that he talks to say where Lilo is. Jumba the appears and captures Stitch and the Pleakley arrives as well. Nani again demands to know where Lilo is and she wants them to bring her back. Jumba and Pleakley refuse and Nani starts to cry. Stitch says “ohana” and convinces Jumba and Pleakley to rescue Lilo. They find Jumba’s spaceship and take off.
Gantu is flying away and Lilo is crying in the back of the ship. Jumba’s ship sneaks up and Stitch waves at Lilo. The chase is on and they two ships fly all over the island. The overweight tourist again looses his ice cream in his shock at seeing the chase. Stitch is the launched out of Jumba’s ship and lands on Gantu’s ship but he is blown off and lands on the road.
Gantu is able to find Stitch by using his computer. He tries to shoot the alien but misses. A truck comes close to Stitch and he commandeers it. Stitch drives over a volcano and dumps the fuel into it. This shoots Stitch up like a rocket and he lands on Gantu’s ship. He saves Lilo and they jump onto Jumba’s ship. The ship then crashes into the ocean near David on his surfboard. Lilo asks if he will give them all rides back to shore.
Once Stitch is on the beach, he is captured by the Grand Councilwoman. She retires Gantu for failing to do his job. She calls Stitch 626 but he corrects her and says his name is Stitch. He asks if he has to go onto the ship and the Grand Councilwoman slowly says yes. Stitch wants to say goodbye first and he introduces Lilo and Nani as his little family. He says that they are broken but still good. He then gets into the ship. Cobra Bubbles then reminds Lilo that she bought Stitch and Lilo shows the Grand Councilwoman the form she has that shows Stitch is hers. She thinks that it would be stealing if Stitch was taken away from her. The Grand Councilwoman then sentences 626 to a lifetime exile which he will serve on Earth. She declares that Lilo and Nani will also be under the protection of the United Galactic Federation. Bubbles says that this is not going to be an easy thing to explain to headquarters and the Grand Councilwoman agrees and says that Bubbles looks familiar. She leaves but will not let Jumba and Pleakley aboard her ship.
Everyone is watching the ship leave and Bubbles explains that he was the one to convince the aliens that mosquitos are an endangered species.
The gang is all fixing up the destroyed house. Then scenes are shown of the little family doing life together. They go surfing, grocery shopping, and Stitch makes them lunches and does the laundry. He bakes a giant birthday cake for Lilo and fire dances with David. Lilo and Stitch go trick or treating and they celebrate Christmas together. The film ends with many photos shown of the family on vacation to places like Graceland and on a cruise.
The end credits roll to “Burning Love” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
